Somerset boys hockey goes winless at Holiday Classic
Jonas Martinelli tallied a hat trick as the Duluth Marshall boys hockey team posted a 4-0 shutout over Somerset Dec. 29 in the Bill McGann Holiday Classic.Â
Martinelli scored a goal in each of the three periods, while Pierce Gouin added the other goal shorthanded.Â
Both teams struggled on the power play with Somerset going 0-for-3 and Marshall finishing 0-for-4.Â
Somerset is now 5-4 overall. Â

The Rails put the Dec. 28 game away thanks to two third period goals in a span of 28 seconds.Â
Five different Rails scored a goal with Tanner Ross, Austin Bryant, and Carson Pavlowich each having two assists.Â
Proctor outshot Somerset 39-15, including 29-10 over the final two periods. Both teams struggled on the power play as the Spartans went 0-for-3, while the Rails went 0-for-5. Carson Belisle stopped 34 shots in a losing effort. Â

Red Lake Falls scored the game’s first four goals which was enough to defeat the Spartans Dec. 27.Â
The Eagles raced out to a 3-0 lead after the game’s first seven minutes as they only needed nine shots on goal in the first period. They added one more before Somerset started its comeback.Â
Ben Myers scored its first goal with Michael Shannon and Wyatt Connors on the assist before the second period elapsed.Â
Jon Brown added a power play goal 49 seconds into the third period with Connors and Malachy Driscoll on the assist. Brock Sawicki scored the third goal with Myers and Shannon on the assists.Â
Brock Seeger ended the Somerset comeback attempt with an empty net goal with 23 seconds left in the third period.Â
The Spartans outshot Red Lake Falls 38-30. Somerset finished 1-for-5 on the power play while Red Lake went 0-for-3. Carson Belisle stopped 25 shots in a losing effort.Â
