It’s not too often the following gets uttered: A Heart of the North team defeats a Big Rivers Conference team in girls basketball.
The St. Croix Falls Saints went against those norms as it had five players in double figures to defeat New Richmond 63-46.
“Both teams had foul trouble, but rebounding was the key for St. Croix Falls,” Saints coach Angie Maternowsky said.
St. Croix Falls finished with 34 rebounds led by Kelsey Cooper’s 11 and Kaylee MIron eight.
Miron scored 17 to led St. Croix Falls (2-0 overall). She also added four assists, three steals and was 11-for-13 from the free throw line.
Cooper finished with 14, while adding three assists and four steals.
“Our inside game was the advantage,” Maternowsky said. St. Croix Falls outscored the Tigers 34-21 in the second half.
Ayla Schmidt and Lucy Belisle each posted 11. Belisle pulled down seven rebounds, while Schmidt had four rebounds and two steals.
Those were the only Saints players that scored.
“Seeing the improvement that the team is making each game,” Maternowsky said, when asked about what she is looking forward from her team next.
