St. Croix Falls High School baseball finished second at the WIAA State Baseball tournament last week.

Heading into the top of the fifth inning, St. Croix Falls had a 4-3 lead over Cuba City in the WIAA Division 3 State Championship Baseball Game June 16 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.

The Saints usually slam the door on any opponent comebacks this season, but not this time as Cuba City scored three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take its first baseball state title, 8-4.

Cuba City’s fifth inning started with a two singles and a hit-by-pitch. A fielders’ choice brought in the first run. Max Lucey’s two-run single gave the Cubans the lead for good.

The sixth inning saw Cuba City tack on two insurance runs thanks to three Saints walks and a passed ball.

The final two innings saw the Saints have a runner reach third base but no further.

St. Croix Falls scored its runs in the first three innings.

In the first, Brady Belisle single to right, scoring Adrian Scott, who doubled. In the second, Sam Glenna reached on a fielders’ choice and scored on an Oliver Schmidt single. The third saw a Belisle triple, scoring Brayden Olson. A Tyler Olson sacrifice fly then scored Belisle.

Will Busch, Riley Rosenkranz and Kobe Vosberg had two hits each for the Cubans (23-4). Jackson Soja finished with three RBI, while Max Lucey had two. Vosberg also scored three times.

Brady Belisle had two hits and two RBI for St. Croix Falls (26-2). Oliver Schmidt, Adrian Scott, Brayden Olson and Tyler Olson had a hit each.

Dylan Smith started and pitched 5 1/3 innings. He gave up seven runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked one.

The Saints will lose only Oliver Schmidt, Sam Glenna, Cole Rutledge and Bryn Gouker.

St. Croix Falls 8, Kenosha St. Joseph 0

Any nerves the Saints had in playing in first state tournament semifinal in 74 years went out the door in its first inning against Kenosha St. Joseph June 15.

With two outs, Tyler Olson singled to right field, scoring Adrian Scott for its first run. Dylan Smith, the next batter, also singled to right, scoring Olson and pinch runner Cole Rutledge.

The Saints were far from finished.

In the third, Brady Belisle reached on a Kenosha error and advanced to second. Olson made the error count, as he singled to left, scoring Belisle.

St. Croix Falls put the game away with three runs in the fourth.

With two runners on and one out, Brayden Olson doubled to right center, scoring Miles Wilson and Oliver Schmidt. Tyler Olson then singled to right field, scoring Rutledge, who was pinch running for Olson.

The Saints added one more run in the fifth when with two outs when Schmidt started the rally with a single. He came around to score on a Scott single.

The eight runs were more than enough for Brayden Olson, who pitched a five-hit shutout. He struck out seven and walked none.

St. Croix Falls finished with eight hits. Tyler Olson went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Dylan Smith went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Brayden Olson, Adrian Scott and Oliver Schmidt had a hit each, while Olson had two RBI. Schmidt scored two runs.
