The season and career isn’t over for Hope Lowney as the Osceola senior girls tennis star will have at least one more match this week.
Lowney earned a berth in the WIAA Division 2 Singles Tournament Oct. 14-16 at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.
Lowney will be carrying a 17-6 record into her first round matchup against Catholic Memorial’s Jessica Jacobson (21-10). The match is scheduled to take place around 6 p.m. Thursday.
It looked like Lowney’s career at Osceola was done as she was defeated by Newman Catholic High’s Becky Larrain 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of singles action at the sectional in Baldwin-Woodville Oct. 6.
The pairings for the state tournament were released Oct. 8 and Lowney’s name was on it as a special qualifier.
“It was well deserved,” Osceola coach Beth Friedrichsen said about the state berth. “There was some unfortunate seeding in sub sectionals and this is making up for it. We are so excited and she is so deserving. State has been Hope’s goal and she has worked so hard for it. I’m so proud of her for getting to that level.”
Hope Lowney played only one match at No. 1 singles, defeating Rice Lake’s Aria Hanson 6-2, 6-2.
Sophia LaVigne started with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Barron’s Annikka Moe, but fell to Regis’ Sofie Merrick 7-5, 6-1 in the second round at No. 2 singles.
“Sofie at No. 2 singles ran into Regis in her second round and that was a bummer,” Osceola coach Beth Friedrichsen said. “She had beaten Regis in the past and started off strong but we all know what a seesaw game tennis can be.”
Rice Lake’s Kendra Richter ended Autumn Guckenberger’s season at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win in the first round.
Grace Gilhousen posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Rice Lake’s Hannah Guertin at No. 4 singles in the first round, but was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Amery’s Lily Marquand in the following round.
All three doubles teams also lost in the first round.
B-W’s Brooke and Allison Albrightson won 6-2, 6-3 over Rachel Olson and Kathryn Marek at No. 1 singles.
Eau Claire Regis’ Abby Erickson and Caroline Shepich eliminated Shaw Styles and Alexis See, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Amery’s Marissa and Annabelle Fisk defeated Adason Gault and Mazie Gillespie, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3 doubles.
