In what best could be described as an opening act, the Barron boys basketball team defeated St. Croix Falls 67-65 in the regular season finale.
The two teams will meet again on Feb. 28 in the opening round of the Division 3 playoffs as the Saints host Barron.
“Overall, it was a pretty good game and competitive all the way to the wire,” SCF coach Chad Hoff said. “We shot the ball pretty well, but Barron hit a few more outside shots which stretched our defense.”
Three Saints finished in double figures led by Aiden Meador’s 18 points. He also added three rebounds and three assists. Brady Belisle, in his season debut, recorded 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Drew Lessman finished with a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“It was a much higher scoring game compared to our meeting earlier in the year,” Hall added. “I think that ended with us winning 42-33.”
Nolan Imhoff chipped in with eight points and six rebounds. Kale Borchert posted six points and two rebounds. Miles Wilson contributed five points and five assists.
“They did a nice job of closing out the game with free throws,” Hall concluded.
St. Croix Falls finished the season 8-10 in the conference and 11-13 overall.
Lessman finished with 10.9 points per game, Meador added 10.1 points while Imhoff finished with 10 points. Lessman recorded nine rebounds per game while Borchert added five.
St. Croix Falls 62,
Grantsburg 44
The Saints outscored Grantsburg by 14 in the second half to pull away to earn the Feb. 20 win.
“The second half we had a couple of good runs and were able to beat their pressure to get the win,” Hall added.
Lessman finished with 17 points, seven rebounds
and four steals. Imhoff posted 11 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Borchert and Wilson contributed nine points. Brandon Waak added eight points. Meador dished out five rebounds and seven assists.
“We played a steady game working the ball on offense and solid defense,” Hall said.
The Saints outrebounded Grantsburg by three and had 12 more assists than the Pirates.
“No big surprises but I thought Grantsburg moved the ball well and really made us work,” Hall stated.
Zach Rombach recorded a double double for Grantsburg with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Dane Lozier finished with 11 points while Jayden Brown added eight points and five rebounds.
