love getting letters from readers. This last one was from a reader named Brett, a resident of Lake Wissota who was searching for articles on a big musky the WI-DNR found doing research 40 years ago. He found only one, my article but remembers reading others. That monster musky, still on his mind, was electro-shocked back in 1988. What follows are clips from my outdoor column written years after the catch to protect that giant fish!

On Oct. 20 1949 Louis Spray caught a 63 inch, 69lb. 8oz. monster that was recognized as the World Record. Cal Johnson took a 60 inch, 67lb 8oz giant that same year out of Wisconsin’s Lac Court Oreilles. Back in 1988 Ken O’Brien caught a 69lb giant out of Blackstone Harbor, Georgian Bay, Ontario. Currently the heaviest fish on record is a 70lb 10oz fish that recently came out of Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota!
