Marie Josephine (Dardine) Steffen died peacefully at home surrounded by her family Nov. 9, 2021. She was 95.
Marie was born July 6, 1926, to Frank and Mandalene Dardine. She was baptized, had First Communion and attended school until the eighth grade at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School in New Richmond.
At age 14 she moved with her family to Eau Claire where she took care of her siblings while her mother worked at Uniroyal Tire Company and her father was in a sanitarium for tuberculosis.
Her father and mother later bought a farm in Glenwood City. Not wanting to live on a farm, she moved back to New Richmond and lived with her cousins where she took a job at a war plant packing K-Rations.
It was then she met the love of her life, Curtis Steffen, at a dance hall. On May 5, 1945, they were united in marriage at a courthouse. At the urging of her father, Marie chose to be confirmed into the Lutheran faith. While her husband served our country during the end of World War II, Marie lived with her parents in Eau Claire and also with her father and mother- in-law in East Farmington.
After her husband returned from his military service, they moved to the John Viebrock farm. In the spring of 1960, they moved their family of nine children to the Louis Nagler farm in East Farmington, which became their permanent family farm where they continued to raise their 12 children.
Due to the declining health issues of Curtis, they moved from the family farm to live with family members until his passing in 1988. Marie then moved into a home provided by her son, Curtis Jr., where she lived until 2010. At that time, she chose to go live with Pam and Richard because of health issues where she resided until the Lord called her home.
Some of her hobbies included jigsaw puzzles, reading magazines, word search puzzles, baking, attending her grandchildren’s activities, but her most loved activity was cooking with Ruby Dorr for the kids at Camp Croix which included many of her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Curtis, Sr., her children Christie Jo and Donnie, a grandchild, a great-grandchild, her parents, Frank and Mandalene, siblings, Grace, Donna, Vivian and Frank.
She is survived by her 10 children, Curtis Jr. (Cheryl), Gerald, David (Clarice), Sharon (Larry) Johnson, Richard, Robert (Jackie), Pam Pederson, Scott (Shannon), Trudy (David) Rixmann and Debbie (Jarrett) Brown, 27 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, with the 51st due in March, and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Nov. 15 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Farmington.
Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, East Farmington.
