Gregory Oman died peacefully at Mayo’s St Mary’s Hospital in the very early morning of Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2022, with his wife by his side. His daughters, sister, and family gathered with him as he transitioned away from this world. He was 71.
Greg was born Jan. 2, 1951, to Robert and Sophy Oman in St. Paul, Minn. He graduated from Cretin Durham Hall and served his country as a soldier in Vietnam. He was deeply proud of his service to his country and it is fitting and beautiful that he left the world on Veteran’s Day, a day that meant so much to him.
Greg was invariably kind and generous as a son, husband, father, uncle, brother, stepfather and grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He was a loving husband and enjoyed his yearly visits to Puerto Vallarta with his wife. He loved good music (especially The Beatles), horror movies, watching football, and his daily rituals of life with Susan and their pomeranian, Petie, including their morning coffee and their nightly dish of ice cream. He was a jokester and was always able to put others at ease with a joke or wry comment. He was a maker of amazing spaghetti and the dance moves of his youth rivaled Michael Jackson, as those who saw him at family weddings would happily confirm.
Greg was preceded in death by his mother and father, Sophy Oman and Robert Oman, and his brother, Timothy Oman.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, his children, Ashley, Maliwan, and Tony; his brother Richard Oman and sister, Robin Oman, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Deborah and Truman Vigen, Patricia Curtis, and Robert and Annette Engelhart; his stepchildren, Christy and Doug Ficek; his stepgrandchildren, Zalea and Jamie, as well as innumerable step nephews and nieces who adored him.
He will be greatly missed.
“When I find myself in times of trouble,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is
standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be”
-Lennon and McCarthy
