Brianna McCurdy

Brianna McCurdy has been a mainstay in the SCF lineup all season long. The Saints swept three more HON games last week and are poised for a big tournament run.

When and Where: Feb. 1 at St. Croix Falls

Outcome: St. Croix Falls 70, Spooner 21

Summary: The Saints opened up a 40 point lead by halftime in the one-sided affair against the Spooner Rails. All 14 varsity players for SCF scored in the ballgame.

Highlights: St. Croix Falls’ defense was very tough to score on holding Spooner to just six first half points. Olivia Miron and Brianna McCurdy led a balanced SCF scoring attack with a dozen points each. Emily McCurdy was also in double figures with 10.

When and Where: Feb. 2 at Chetek

Outcome: St. Croix Falls 65, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser 25

Summary: The Saints’ defense was stellar again limiting the Bulldogs to 12 points in the first half and 13 after the break.

Highlights: Emily McCurdy led St. Croix Falls in scoring as she dropped in 17 points. Senior Emma Cooper was solid in the post and added 13 points to the SCF collection.

When and Where: Feb. 4 at St. Croix Falls

Outcome: St. Croix Falls 60, Hayward 24

Summary: The Saints made it three straight for the week and 16 straight overall as they defeated the Hurricanes by 36 points. SCF gave up just 70 total points in three games during a very successful week.

Highlights: Lucia Neuman held the hot hand for St. Croix Falls as she netted 16 points with 12 of them coming as a result of four successful treys. Emily McCurdy and Miron were also in double figures scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.

Senior Night: “Senior night was held against Hayward,” St. Croix Falls Coach Angie Maternowsky noted. “The seniors, Emily (McCurdy), Olivia (Miron), Emma (Cooper), and Lucia (Neuman) have had an amazing season. They lead us in points and rebounds.

Comments: “The girls are playing well together both on offense and defense,” Maternowsky said. “We are doing a nice job making the extra pass and seeing our teammates. We like to play fast and are capitalizing on our transition game.”

What this Means:  St. Croix Falls clinched at least a tie for first place in the Heart O’North conference with their win over Hayward.  The Saints had a 14-1 record at the end of last week. Northwestern was at 12-2 in second place in the HON.

Upcoming: The Saints will begin WIAA Regional tournament play on Feb. 12 against the winner of the game between Elk Mound (4-seed) and St. Croix Central (5-seed). SCF earned the top seed in their Regional and will host the game on the 12th.
