When and Where: May 21 at Hayward
Outcome: Hayward 8, St. Croix Falls Saints 5
Highlights: St. Croix Falls took and early 2-0 lead in the first inning but Hayward came back with five runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead. The Hurricanes added a run in the third and a deuce in the fourth to open up an 8-2 lead. The Saints rallied for three runs in the seventh but their rally fell short as Hayward held on to a 8-5 decision.
Comments: “A lot of players got opportunities to get ready for playoffs,” St. Croix coach Matt Vold said. “Our bats were quiet but we had a good finish to the game.”
When and Where: May 23 at St. Croix Falls. Round-1 of WIAA Regional.
Outcome: St. Croix Falls 1, Clayton/Turtle Lake 0 (nine innings)
Highlights: It was an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel. In a game that could not be decided in regulation the St. Croix Falls Saints finally put a run across the board in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim an opening round win in the WIAA Regional tournament. In the bottom of the 9th inning Luke Thaemert led off with a single. Peyton Christenson followed with a single. (AJ) Simpkins hit a line drive to right field which was caught and Turtle Lake/Clayton was able to double off the runner at first with a great throw. With a runner on second, two outs, and two strikes, Sam Wilson hit a towering double over the left fielder’s head to score Thaemert with the winning run. St. Croix pitcher Jared Lessman struck out 14 batters and Sam Wilson closed out the game for the Saints.
Comments: “A great team win for the Saints,” Vold said. “The game was truly a team win with everyone doing their job to accomplish the teams’ goal.”
Upcoming: St. Croix, the 3-seed in the Regional, will now move on the play the second seeded Cumberland Beavers on May 28. The winner of that game will play the winner of the game between Spooner (1-seed) and Unity (5-seed) the next day, May 29.
