Suzanne Lindgren, in her essay on “if you don’t love it, leave it” makes a good point in encouraging us to listen to each other. There is another way to look at this.

The law of the land is that abortion is legal. Does that mean that those people who oppose abortion should go back to where their parents or grandparents came from? The law of the land is that citizens have the right to bear arms. Does that mean that those people who argue for sane gun regulation to stop the carnage in this country should go back to where their parents or grandparents came from?

The law of the land is that national leaders should not lie to the public, use their office for personal wealth or the wealth of their friends, or collaborate with the nation’s enemies. Does that mean that Donald Trump should be exported to some unfortunate country that would have to put up with him?

Of course not. Democracy is strengthened by disagreement and discussion. There is no democracy if there is no dissent. The current president and his hangers-on don’t seem to understand or care about that. Instead of the stupid chant “Go back where you came from,” a real leader should be saying “Come here with your ideas.” That would make America Great Again.
