Shirley was born in Vancouver, Wash., on Feb. 26, 1935, the youngest of five children of Glen Elder and Frances Lily Sinclair. She was married to Charles Braun for 58 years of loving marriage.
Shirley served in the U.S. Navy and met Charles, also in the Navy, in Norfolk, Va. They were married in 1957 and after a short time living in Bremerton, Wash., settled in Wisconsin. In Osceola, Shirley was an active member in the Osceola Women’s Club (OWC), and in 1975 she was recruited to become the first professional librarian of what is now the Osceola Public Library. With some secondhand book shelves and books purchased by the OWC, they set up shop in two rooms of the Osceola Inn, and shortly afterward the location now known as the Emily Olson House on River Street. Shirley went about the business of supplying the residents of Osceola with literature to both educate and entertain. Shirley carried on her duties twelve years and resigned in 1987.
