Gordon Sherwood Fox of St. Croix Falls, died Jan. 10, 2019, at St. Croix Falls Regional Medical Center. He was 89.
He was born April 26, 1929, in Centuria to Bert and Martha (Stoltz) Fox. The family moved to St. Croix Falls one year later. He grew up with four brothers, Dale, Tommy, Robert, Jerome, and one sister, Audrey. All have preceded him in death.
Gordon graduated from St. Croix Falls High School where he was a star basketball player. At a young age he helped his father in carpenter work and continued on to establish his own building contractor business. He built many residential homes and commercial buildings in the surrounding area, including the original Trollhaugen Chalet, Taylors Falls Motel, St. Croix Falls Motel, (converted for use as the former St. Croix National Scenic Riverway Headquarters), Edling’s Apartments, and many church additions. Gordon was active in the community, serving as President of the Lion’s Club, on the original Board of Directors of the Friends of Wisconsin Interstate Park, and President of the First Lutheran Church of Cushing. He served in the Naval Air Reserve for 35 years, as Aviation Ordinance First Class, retiring in 1989.
Gordon and Marion (Burnstead) were married at First Lutheran Church of Cushing on July 14, 1951. After living in Minneapolis for two years, they built their home and lived in St. Croix Falls. Gordon broke his hip in July of 2018. After surgery at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, he entered the Good Samaritan Center in St. Croix Falls. He enjoyed two days at home with home healthcare before entering the hospital on Jan. 5.
Gordon enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed sharing his travel experiences while in the Naval Air Reserve, talking about all the cars and trucks he owned and his building accomplishments. He and Marion enjoyed traveling, and spending retirement winters in Orange Beach, Ala., and Mesa, Az.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marion; children Lynnette (Greg) Lyons of Two Harbors, Minn., Lonnie (Joan) Fox of St. Louis Park, Minn., Julieann Fox (Michael Smith) of Siren, Janelle Fox (Deven Hui) of Rochester, Minn.; grandchildren Brad (Heather) Fox, Charlie (Andrea) Lyons, Alyssa (John) Johnson, Jenna Fox, Ian Martin, Nathan Martin; and six great-grandchildren, Logan and Josie Johnson, Graham and Wesley Fox, Haven Martin and Alexander Lyons.
