Earl “Sonny” Melvin Foss, age 85, of Osceola, Wis., passed away Thursday, July 18, 2019 at his home on the family farm in Osceola.

Earl was born April 6, 1934 at home on the farm in Osceola Township to parents, Ernest and Alma (Larson) Foss. He lived near or on the family farm his full life (and died in almost exactly the spot where he was born). Sonny was baptized on May 6, 1934 and confirmed in his faith June 5, 1949, both at West Immanuel Lutheran Church. He married the love of his life, Marlene Mork on February 7, 1958 also at West Immanuel. Sonny and Marlene rarely spent a day apart from the day they met through their 44 years of marriage until Marlene passed away on May 6, 2002.

Sonny was highly skilled in many trades and worked as a mechanic, carpenter, farmer, machine builder and for 29 years as a technician for Viking Gas.

Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, traveling with Marlene and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Many would say he could fix anything. In his later years, he enjoyed roaming the farm on his Ranger and keeping a sharp eye on the crops and wildlife from the lovely view from his recliner. His unique blend of strong work ethic, old-fashioned goodness, appreciation of the simpler things and deep thoughtfulness set him apart. He will be dearly missed.

Sonny is survived by his children, Bruce (Laura) Foss, Sherry (Mark) Schroeder and Kim (Jon) Foster; grandchildren, Bruce, Jr. (Melissa) Foss, Cory Foss, Erick (Kelly) Foss, Dain Foss, Trever Foss, Elise Schroeder, Sydney Schroeder and Tia Foster; great-grandchildren, Alivia and Camdyn Foss; brother, Roy (Beverly) Foss; sister, Betty (Dale) Bliese; brother-in-law, Donald Waalen; sister-in-law, Sue Ann Foss; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Sonny is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlene; brother, John and sisters, Mary (Charles) McElfresh and June Waalen.

A memorial service was held 11:00am, Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at West Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osceola and was followed by a private interment at the West Immanuel Lutheran cemetery. Preceding the service, a visitation took place from 4:00pm -7:00pm, Monday July 22 at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Osceola, and continued one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements were made with the Grandstrand Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed online at www.grandstrandfh.com. Memorials may also be directed to Adoray Home Health and Hospice or West Immanuel Lutheran Church – Youth Programs.
