Osceola’s new Library Director may be young, but is not inexperienced when it comes to helping people and customer service. Thanks to her background in retail and HR services at Barron County Cheese in Barron, Wisconsin, and her role as a library assistant at the Amery Area Public Library, Shelby Friendshuh (pronounced friend-shoe) has greeted many customers and patrons with a welcoming smile and how-can-I-help attitude.
Friendshuh earned a double major in Information Science & Technology and English Literature at UW-Milwaukee and is currently in the MLIS (Masters in Library and Information Science) program through UW-Milwaukee’s online program, with completion scheduled for the fall of 2020.
Raised and currently residing in Turtle Lake, she was attracted to Osceola’s new Discovery Center library and the career opportunity it presented for her. Since her first day at OPL on June 17, Friendshuh has been eager to help staff at the circulation desk in order to meet patrons and interact with the community.
Being a Library Director was not always in her plans. “My first thought was to be a Youth Service Librarian – I love interacting with children – but the more I worked at the Amery Library circulation desk I realized how passionate I was about serving everyone, no matter who or what their needs are. I want to advocate for all people and their right to access all that the library has to offer. That’s why I chose to be a Library Director.”
A desire to serve, “that’s at the heart of my work,” she states.
“I want to help serve the Osceola community, to create a space welcoming of all individuals. A place where each person can come to find their next favorite book, to learn something new, to help their children form a lifelong love of learning, and so much more.”
The OPL staff has “worked tirelessly to make an inclusive and friendly environment. I can’t thank them enough. I hope that my presence will enhance that even more. In my first days at the library I have been met with nothing but friendly faces, support and patience.”
And, Friendshuh adds, “My door is always open at the Discovery Center. Stop in anytime if you would like to know more about me or the library!”
Friendshuh is a wife and mother, married to Brian and mom to 1½ year-old Calvin. Needless to say, after hours are often spent with Calvin, but she also enjoys playing with her dogs Alphonse and Charley, gardening, reading, playing video games, and taking side-by-side ATV romps on their property.
And she’s a baseball jock – NOT! – but she will be throwing out the first pitch at the Braves game on Wednesday, June 26, so you can meet her in person. The Library Board is hosting a Meet & Greet with free root beer floats beginning at 7:30 p.m., while supplies last. The public is invited.
